But the choice is wide and prices vary a lot, so the question often comes up: where do I start, and what will really suit my child or my group? In this article we offer a simple plan for choosing sensory toys by sense, by the child’s needs and by where they will be used.

What are sensory toys?

Sensory toys are toys and aids that deliberately engage one or more senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell, movement and balance. The child does not just play – they explore textures, colours, sounds or smells and learn to recognise and name them. We wrote more about how the senses work together in our article on sensory integration in children.

A sensory toy does not have to be complicated or expensive. What matters most is that it suits the child’s age and interests and is safe for everyday use.

Four questions before you buy

1. Which sense do you want to develop?

Start with the goal. If the child loves touching everything, choose tactile aids. If they are drawn to light and colour, choose visual aids. If you want to build attention to sounds and language, choose listening games. One well-chosen toy is more useful than several random ones.

2. Does the child seek stimulation or avoid it?

Some children seek strong sensations – they constantly touch, squeeze and move. Others, on the contrary, avoid certain textures or sounds. The first group enjoys active, “high-input” aids; the second group needs gentle ones that can be explored little by little, at their own pace.

3. How old is the child?

Always check the age recommended by the manufacturer. The youngest need large, easy-to-grip pieces; older children enjoy games with rules, tasks and cards.

4. Where will the aid be used?

At home a few versatile aids are usually enough. For a kindergarten group or a specialist’s room it is worth choosing sturdy, easy-to-clean aids that several children can use at once.

Sensory toys by sense

Touch

Tactile games teach children to recognise surfaces: rough and smooth, soft and hard. For example, the wooden touch game invites the child to explore and compare different wooden textures and shapes. It is a great calm activity at the table.

Sight

Light and colour catch almost every child’s attention. The A2 LED light panel has an evenly glowing surface on which children can arrange transparent shapes or coloured discs, trace, and observe colours and outlines – an activity that develops visual perception and fine motor skills.

Hearing

Listening games teach children to listen carefully and tell sounds apart. The sound lotto with sound cards and a player is a popular aid both at home and in a speech therapist’s room: the child listens to a sound and finds the matching picture.

Smell

Smell is often forgotten, although children find recognising scents very exciting. The game “Smell, guess and learn fruits!” turns scents into a fun guessing game and encourages the child to name what they smell.

Movement and balance

For movement and balance, floor aids work well. The “Tullo” sensory liquid floor tiles create moving colour effects with every step – you can lay them out as a path for children to walk barefoot or crawl along.

Calm hands-on play

Kinetic sand is one of the favourite aids for calm, longer play. It does not scatter like ordinary sand, it is easy to shape, and kneading and moulding develop fine motor skills.

A sensory corner at home or in a group: where to start

Choose a quiet spot with a mat or a low table.

Start with 3–4 aids for different senses, not ten at once.

Keep the aids in boxes and rotate them every few weeks so they stay interesting.

Begin with short sessions of 5–10 minutes and watch what the child enjoys.

Let the child choose and never force them to touch something they avoid.

Sensory aids for children on the autism spectrum

Many parents look for sensory aids for children on the autism spectrum. The most important rule: every child is different – what one child enjoys and finds calming may be too much for another. It is best to choose aids together with a specialist who knows the child (an occupational therapist, speech therapist or special education teacher), introduce them one at a time and watch the child’s reaction closely.

How can you tell a toy suits the child?

The best indicator is the child. Watch how they respond to a new aid during the first few days, and do not draw conclusions after a single try.

The child comes back to the toy on their own and asks for it.

While playing they look interested and focused rather than irritated.

Play time gradually gets longer and new ways of playing appear.

The child starts naming what they feel: “rough”, “it glows”, “it smells like apple”.

If the child avoids an aid, that is fine – put it aside and try again in a few weeks, or offer it differently, for example by playing with it yourself first while the child watches.

Safety and care

Follow the manufacturer’s age recommendation, especially if the toy has small parts.

Supervise the youngest children throughout play.

Keep kinetic sand and other loose materials in a box with a lid and play on a tray – it makes tidying up much easier.

Check and clean the aids regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions, especially if the whole group uses them.

Frequently asked questions

From what age are sensory toys suitable?

There are sensory toys for many ages. Each product description states the age recommended by the manufacturer – please follow it.

How many sensory toys do you need at home?

A few aids for different senses are enough to start. Fewer toys that are used often are better than many that sit on a shelf.

Are sensory toys suitable for a kindergarten group?

Yes. For a group, choose sturdy, easy-to-clean aids that several children can use at once, such as floor tiles, a light panel or kinetic sand.

Does a sensory toy replace sessions with a specialist?

No. Sensory toys are aids for play and learning. If you have questions about your child’s development, please consult a specialist.

Which sensory toy makes a good gift?

If you do not know the child’s interests, choose a versatile, age-appropriate aid that can be played with in many ways – for example kinetic sand or a tactile game. Such a gift works both at home and in kindergarten.

How often should you rotate sensory aids?

There is no strict rule. Many parents and teachers rotate aids every two or three weeks: they put some away in a cupboard and bring others out. This way the same toys feel new again, and the child does not get tired of too much choice.

You will find all the aids we have selected in the Sensory aids for children category.
