In this article we explain what sensory integration is, how to recognise its difficulties and which aids can help a child.

What is sensory integration?

Sensory integration is the process by which the brain processes and interprets information received from the senses: touch, movement, balance, sight, hearing, taste and smell. When this process runs smoothly, a child is able to respond appropriately to their surroundings, to learn and to behave.

But when sensory integration is disrupted, a child may sense certain stimuli too strongly or too weakly, find it harder to concentrate, manage emotions and learn new things.

How to recognise sensory integration difficulties?

The signs of sensory integration difficulties can be very varied. Here are the most commonly noticed:

Avoids certain textures (of food, clothing, surfaces)

Overly sensitive to sounds, light or touch

Constantly seeks strong sensory stimuli (bumps around, jumps, touches everything)

Struggles with balance or coordination

Quickly swings from euphoria to tears

Finds it hard to concentrate and stay in one place

These signs are often seen in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or other developmental disorders, but they can also appear in entirely healthy children.

Which sensory aids help a child?

Tactile toys (for developing touch)

Tactile toys help children who avoid touching different textures or, conversely, constantly seek tactile stimuli. Such toys develop the sense of touch and help them respond more normally to different surfaces.

Weighted loads

Weighted blankets and shoulder loads are used with children who have proprioceptive (body-position sense) difficulties. They provide a feeling of “weight” that helps the child feel more at home in their body, calm down and concentrate.

Smell games

Smell is one of the least developed senses. Smell-recognition games and Montessori scent gardens help children get to know various smells, calm the nervous system and improve concentration.

Sensory layers and gels

Sensory foam gels and tactile-play aids give a child a safe way to explore different textures without stress or anxiety.

How to use sensory aids at home?

Sensory aids can be used both in a therapy room with a specialist (an occupational therapist or speech therapist) and at home. It is important to:

Start with short (5–10 min) sensory games

Let the child decide for themselves how long they want to play

Do not push the child towards aids they avoid – let them get used to them gradually

Consult an occupational therapist or speech therapist about an individual plan

Recommended sensory aids from our shop:

Weighted shoulder wrap – sensory load for calm and concentration

Wooden touch game – a sensory tactile development game with natural textures

Discover textures and nature’s secrets – a texture-exploration game

Four blowing games – oral motor skills and sensory games

Smell, guess and learn fruits – a smell-development game

Where to find sensory aids in Lithuania?

O.
