💪 The ARK Grabber® Original is the first and most classic oral motor chew tool, created by the American speech and language therapist Debra C. Lowsky (MS, CCC-SLP). The P-shaped design with its comfortable loop is easy to hold even in small hands, and the long part reaches the molars – exactly where chewing practice is needed most. A safe alternative to chewing on hands, shirts or pencils.
✨ What does this chew tool develop?
- Biting and chewing skills – practice without food, and so without any choking risk;
- Jaw strength and stability – a “gym machine” for the oral muscles, for daily exercise;
- Sensory self-regulation – a safe answer to the need to chew (stress, anxiety, ADHD, the autism spectrum);
- Replacing harmful habits – an alternative to nail biting, teeth grinding and biting objects.
🎲 How to use it at home
Let your child hold the chew tool themselves – that is what the loop is for. Guide the long part towards the molars and encourage chewing on one side and then the other. Keep the chew tool to hand in a rucksack or on the table – whenever the urge to chew something arises, offer the Grabber® instead of a shirt or a pencil.
🧑🏫 Tips for specialists
All ARK chew tools are made in three colour-coded levels of firmness, so the aid can be matched to the need and made gradually more demanding. We stock two levels: fuchsia (magenta) – Standard, the softest – for low oral tone and for those only starting to learn to bite, and light green – XT (Medium), medium firmness – for active chewers or for those who have “outgrown” the Standard level. The smooth surface is a neutral starting point; for clients seeking sensory stimulation, see the textured version ARK Textured Grabber®. It also suits work with tube-fed individuals – to keep the experience of chewing alive.
